NME Front cover analysis

The main purpose of this analysis of a front cover is to identify methods of layout and construction including formation of text and images and so on. In addition as my magazine is of a similar audience to this magazine I was interested in finding out how the appeal to their particular target audience.

The type of the magazine this is is a music magazine and the specific genre of music that this magazine features is Indie Rock, alternative and new wave, this is suggested by the bands and artists which are on the front cover examples include; the Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes and Radiohead. From the magazines front cover we know that the magazine will consist of features from bands such as The Arctic Monkeys (Central image)
The target audience of this magazine are students aged around 16-20 who are generally into the music featured in this magazine. The interests of these people would be going to gigs, listening to music and going to festivals.
The magazine is using a direct mode of address in order for it to seem as if the bands in the central image are making direct contact with the audience, this helps to create a close personal relationship with the audience as it looks as if the band are looking straight into the audiences eyes. The band featured on the front cover are the Arctic Monkeys, this is indicated by the anchorage text which says “Arctic Monkeys”. The band have been selected to feature on the cover as in Britain, the Arctic Monkeys are the biggest rock band and are massively popular in the world Indie music, therefore the audience of NME will automatically recognise them. The anchorage text says “Arctic Monkeys. Back in business. The exclusive new album interview.” This implies that the band are making a long awaited comeback with a new album. Through the anchorage text and the central image we can establish that the band are coming back and intend to be better than ever, we can establish this by the facial expression of each individual member of the bands’ facial expressions. They all look very serious and determined. This is supported by the line “Back in business”. This representation of the band has been suggested by the mise-en-scene of the cover. The bands costume consist of all dark coloured clothes which helps to create this serious atmosphere, as well as the lighting of the image which is saturated, supported again by their facial expressions. The type of shot which has been used for this image is a mid shot, this has been used in order to fit in all the members of the band and to show their body language, the way they’re are standing is very organised and in a mature professional manner which is further support of the serious determined message the band aim to send out.
The design of the title block tells us that the style of the magazine is like a newspaper however for one which covers only articles about music; this is implied by the font and size of the title block. It is a very basic font and is very big and bold in size similar to the title of a newspaper such as the metro and the sun.  The title block also tells us about the type of readership of the magazine. There is a super imposition on this front cover where the heads of the band are imposing the title block and slogan which suggests that the magazine has a strict audience who will know despite having half of the title cut out that this magazine is NME.
The magazine front cover has quite a few puffs; these tell us that the magazine will consist of stories, features and articles of bands such as The Ramones, The Strokes, Katy B and Wild Beasts. From this we gain knowledge of type of audience that this magazine will appeal to which would be people generally who are into Indie Rock, alternative and new wave type music.
The slogan of the magazine ‘New Musical express’ implies again that this magazine is to an extent like a newspaper for music. The words ‘Musical express’ suggest that it is similar to a newspaper such as the newspaper ‘The Daily express’ It helps attract to the reader as the reader feels guaranteed to have the latest news in the music world, which in essence helps to fight off competition from rival magazines such as Q and The Fly.
